A problematic plant: bristly, yet edible. As blindingly purple as the firmament, yet weedy. Its leaves, which children avoid, shelter snails. When burned, it lays down its nutrients onto crop fields, furnishing them with alkaline salts.

“Is not this a lesson for our own mortal souls?” Deakin asks. His desk is crowded with seedpods I have brought him, and turtle shells he’s found on his own. He has plans to make them into rattles for his nieces.

“That we too may treat with both the saints and the Devil?”

He tilts his head at me. “No,” his hand on a shell. “That in dying our flesh shall be made into different matter and offer sustenance to the next spring of man.”

“Your nieces’ nieces wait for you, then.”

He doesn’t hear me, but moves his hand to the dried burdock heads. “Cumbersome,” he says. He repeats the word, trying to reconcile it with this new definition of faith.
